Laptops I recommend for students

Why this size is better than others

This time of year, I am frequently asked about what would be a good laptop for a student.

Before I give my recommendation, welcome to all the new subscribers! I appreciate you allowing me in your email inbox. Here’s a link to last week’s email, if you didn’t get a chance to read it:

Okay, back to laptops. In general, here’s what I recommend for students:

  • A business class laptop with a 14 inch screen

Here’s why:

A business class laptop is designed and built to be more reliable and durable than a consumer class laptop. That’s a good fit for students who will be carrying their laptop around more, and have a higher likelihood of accidental damage, than the average person.

The 14 inch screen size is also for easy portability. There are smaller screen sizes, but the 14 inch is easy enough to carry and the screen is big enough to comfortably use for writing papers and researching.

I do have some ThinkPad laptops available now:

I also highly recommend the HP EliteBook 840 laptops for students. I’ll have some of these available soon.

For students who will be doing all or most of the their studies from home online a laptop with a 15.6 inch screen may work fine. These would also be good for students who do a lot of numerical data entry, as most 15.6 inch laptops come with a number keypad, while the 14 inch and smaller laptops do not.

Almost all the computers I sell are refurbished business class machines. These are a good value, as they are less expensive than a new machine and more reliable, upgrade-able and repairable than consumer class machines.
