“Why is my computer so slow?”

For years, I have been replacing slow hard drives with faster Solid State Drives (SSDs). If your computer is feeling slower than it used to, the speed of the storage drive is the first thing to check.

Though, most computers do have SSDs now, so there can be other reasons for sluggish performance.

The next thing I would check is to see how much memory (RAM) the system has and if it can be upgraded. Memory allows you to run more programs, or browser tabs, at a time before slowing down. If your computer has 8GB or less of memory, upgrading to 16GB or more would make a noticeable difference.

The CPU, or processor, could be a reason for slowness. In a desktop computer, the CPU can usually be upgraded. Sometimes that is worth doing. In laptops, the processor is usually soldered to the motherboard and not upgrade-able (or at least not without replacing the whole motherboard).

Those are the most frequent hardware factors for why a computer may not be performing as well as you’d like it to.

Sometimes it is not obvious what the problem is. I can help with an assessment. I can also do things to optimize the software and operating system.
