Tech Tip: How to Quickly Switch Browser Tabs
Switch to a specific browser tab with this keyboard shortcut. Video demo.
Even if you’ve been using something a long time, there’s opportunities to learn new things. I’ve been using web browsers since the 1990s and just recently stumbled across this useful trick.
While using a web browser, I have a lot tabs open. Usually I have so many tabs open that I can’t see them all. When I’m viewing the 17th tab, I may want to quickly switch to the 2nd tab. Here’s how to do that.
In Windows, while in a web browser, pressing and holding Ctrl and then pressing a number will switch you to the tab with the corresponding number (with the left-most tab being tab number one).
So Ctrl + 5 will take you to the fifth tab, Ctrl + 1 will switch you to the first tab and so on.
In Linux, it is a similar concept, but with the Alt key instead. So Alt + 7 will take you to the seventh tab, Alt + 1 will switch you to the first tab.
In macOS, it is “Command” plus a number.
The number 9, using these key combos, will take you to the last tab, no matter how many you have open.
If you’d like to see a visual “how to”, I made a video and published to Youtube and also to Peertube (if you prefer to not use Youtube):
